The SCS Child Care Program was first introduced at the Burnham Building in 1984. This program has since expanded to seven sites with locations at: Central, Highland, Hill View, Maplewood and Whiteford for grade 1-6; and at Northview H.S. and Woodrow for two Preschool locations.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Sylvania Community Services (SCS) Child Care Department to provide quality care to children including social, emotional, intellectual and physical opportunities for their development.

Our Programs

Sylvania Community Services (SCS for short) provides quality Child Care year round for the Sylvania Community. All programs are state licensed and all programs are Pay-Only-When-You-Stay.


Before and After School Care

Extended Time (E.T. for short) is designed for children in grades K through 6. Care is available before school beginning at 6:30 AM until school begins, and after school until 6:30 PM.

E.T. is provided in the school cafeteria by SCS staff members.

E.T. is available at:

  • Central Elementary School (known as Central E.T.) for those students
  • Highland Elementary School (known as Highland E.T.) for those students
  • Hill View Elementary School (known as Hill View E.T.)for those students
  • Maplewood Elementary (known as Maplewood E.T.) for Maplewood and Sylvan students
  • Whiteford Elementary School(known as Whiteford E.T.) for those students and Stranahan students

Care for Grade 6 is provided at:
  • Central Elementary for Timberstone Junior High students
  • Highland Elementary for McCord Junior High students
  • Hill View Elementary for Arbor Hills Junior High students

All Day Programs and School Delays

Child Care is provided by SCS at Tam-O-Shanter when schools are on holiday breaks, delayed or cancelled because of weather and when schools are closed for parent-teacher conferences. Pre-planned programs are pre-pay and available to families currently registered in our regular Child Care programs.

Summer Day Camp

formerly held at the Burnham building SCS provides summer day camp for children Grades K-6. Daily swimming at Plummer Pool, structured activities and basic fun is provided! Field trips, art projects, and guest visitors help round out the fun. A packed lunch is needed. We provide a morning and afternoon snack.

Summer Day Camp is available Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

Summer Camp 2011 for Ages 6-11
June 13 to August 30

Woodrow Preschool for ages 3-5
5900 Woodrow Drive, Sylvania, OH

This jewel is tucked away back near the exit of Veterans Memorial Field off Erie Street. It was newly renovated in 2009 with fresh paint, new flooring, and refurbished mechanical systems. A safe, shaded and fenced play area is equipped with new and familiar play structures and toys. This center offers an early childhood development center for ages 3 to 5 years that includes a 2.5 hour preschool with accompanying care Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM. The “Creative Curriculum” is followed with the classroom set up in theme-based centers. Parent-teacher conferences are provided and all lesson plans are aligned with Early Learning Content Standards (Ohio Dept. of Education.) During the summer, the children help tend a garden and also swim at Plummer Pool. A packed lunch is needed. Year-round care is provided. Daily and weekly rates are available with one day per week minimum fee required. This site has a Two-Star rating by Ohio's Step-Up-To-Quality program.

Northview Preschool for ages 3-5  
Northview H.S. 5403 Silica Drive, Sylvania, OH

This site offers an early childhood development center for children ages 3 to 5 years that includes a curriculum based 2.5 hour preschool with accompanying care Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM. This preschool is a joint venture of Sylvania Schools Career Technology Department and Sylvania Community Services. SCS provides full staffing for this program. As a training site for high school students studying Early Childhood Development, the children have the benefit of much individualized attention. A packed lunch is needed. We provide a morning and afternoon snack. Northview preschool follows a school year calendar and is closed when school is closed. Daily and weekly rates are available with one day per week minimum fee required.
